Poor Pulmonaria. Disliking the confines of a small pot, its straggly appearance means that it often languishes away in garden centres, ignored by gardeners who are after a fix of instant perfection. If only it was given a chance, liberated from its plastic prison and allowed to live life to the full, a handsome citizen of a fertile shady spot. Flowers in shades of pinks, purples, whites and blues herald the imminent arrival of spring and as they fade the foliage expands, forming large mounds of bristly leaves that offer a striking assortment of silver spots and splashes. In fact some plants have leaves that are pure silver, a very unusual feature for a shade loving plant. The pink and blue flowers of Pulmonaria officinalis appear together, creating a charming effect.
